TYPOCRYPHA is an experimental Typing JRPG Visual Novel about social and cultural alienation. 

A young, naive Spellcaster is sent on their first mission overseas as part of the EVE-IRIS Counter-Demon Force. Wielding the TYPOCRYPHA device, the magic wand of the 21st Century, they are instructed to defeat the demonic forces of the EVIL EYE that plague the world. But, there is a problem...

...what IS the EVIL EYE?

  • TYPING GAME WHERE WORDS MATTER
    • Unlike other typing games, the words you type aren't arbitrary! Type in Spell Words to unleash their power!
  • PURE KNOWLEDGE PROGRESSION
    • You can use any spell in the game at any time if you know the words.
  • WORD COMBINATIONS
    • Modify existing Spells with Prefixes and Suffixes to change their effects!
  • KEYBOARD STATUS EFFECTS
    • Enemy Spells affect your keyboard! Fight against the machine as your keys get burned, frozen, and swapped!
  • SATISFYING ACTIVE TIME BATTLE SYSTEM
    • A responsive element-based ATB battle system that draws from modern JRPGs to give a simple, but satisfying base to a non-traditional input system.
  • EXPERIMENTAL LO-FI AESTHETIC
    • Lo-fi visuals inspired by the quality of PS1/Sega Saturn era 2D graphics.
  • CLASSIC JRPG SOUNDTRACK WITH A CYBER TWIST
    • Music inspired by classic JRPGs fused with modern elements to create a memorable listening experience.
  • HEAVY NARRATIVE FOCUS
    • A visual novel story dealing with social and cultural alienation/othering in the modern age. (How this relates to Typing games is a mystery... in this demo...)

This is our first public demo, Demonstration I. Version 0.0 was originally produced in 5 months part-time by the UCSC Game Design and Arts Collaboration Club (GDA) for the UCSC Sammy Showcase.

Final Version release date indefinite due to official dissolution of the team at the end of the school year. Any and all feedback is appreciated for support towards the continuation of this project.

Install instructions

Download and unzip the appropriate build for your platform.

Double click the .exe/.app to begin.

Controls:
  • QWERTY-keyboard: Input Text
  • Space: Next Dialogue Box / Insert word-connector dash
  • Enter/Return: Execute/Enter Input Text
  • Backspace: Clear Input Letters
  • Shift: Open Scouter (Battle)
  • Tab: Insert Last-entered Input (Battle)
  • Escape: Pause Game

It seems to be shelved, unfortunately. I wish this would be made into a full game. The concept is so good!

Trying to play the Mac version, but the left side is too cut off to get anywhere.

Hiya, thank you for commenting!

This has been a known issue from this version of the game; it is very buggy due to lack of development time. We have been rebuilding the game during the past year to remedy these technical issues. 

Unfortunately, because this demo's Unity project is very difficult to work with and does not reflect the current state of the game, we will not be supporting this build further. However, there will be a new demo in the next month or so with enhanced gameplay & story scenario, so please look forward to it! 

We apologize for the inconvience. If you want to progress still, the beginning message to type for access is "SPHINX OF BLACK QUARTZ JUDGE MY VOW".

Ah thanks for that, there's no problems once I can get into the menu and change the resolution from the settings.

But this game is amazing!  Love the setting, style, storytelling, and SMT influence.  And a really unique take on typing combat; never gets boring while still rewarding faster typing speeds.  I really hope you're able to complete it one day.  This seriously has the potential to be the next VA-11.

A tremendously ambitious and well-executed little game! I could see this getting a lot of mainstream attention if it were completed. Whatever its developers plan to do, I just hope to see more from them!
